How We Calculate Divorce Costs

Full explanation of our calculation methodology, data sources, and factors affecting the estimate

Divorcify's divorce cost calculator is based on official tariffs published by the Israeli Courts Administration, market surveys of lawyer fees, and professional mediation and appraisal cost data. The estimate is regularly updated to provide a realistic picture of expected costs.

Data Sources

Court fees are based on the official tariff schedule published by the Courts Administration. Rabbinical Court fees are based on the Regulations for Proceedings in Rabbinical Courts.

Lawyer fees are based on market surveys and accepted price ranges among family law attorneys. Mediation and appraisal costs are based on market rates from certified mediators and appraisers.

Calculation Steps

  1. 1

    Classify divorce type

The system classifies the divorce type (consensual / contested) and selects the appropriate fee range.

  2. 2

    Assess complexity

Based on children, property, and special factors, the system calculates a complexity score that affects the fee level.

  3. 3

    Calculate court fees

Court or tribunal fees are calculated based on the chosen jurisdiction and required claim types (divorce, property, custody, child support).

  4. 4

    Estimate additional costs

Mediation, property appraisal, expert opinions — each component is calculated separately based on relevance to the case.

  5. 5

    Summarize cost range

All components are summed to produce a range estimate (minimum — maximum) with a per-category breakdown.

  • Actual costs vary by region, lawyer experience, and case complexity
  • The estimate does not include indirect costs such as lost work days or emotional costs
  • Fees may be updated — verify against the Courts Administration website

Methodology FAQ

Does the estimate represent an average cost?

The estimate provides a range (minimum — maximum), not an average. The range is based on accepted market rates and varies by case complexity.

How can I reduce divorce costs?

The most effective way: reach agreements in advance, use mediation, and minimize the issues requiring judicial decision.

Does the duration affect cost?

Absolutely. Prolonged divorces (a year or more) can double the cost due to additional hearings, expert opinions, and court expenses.

Are there hidden costs the calculator doesn't include?

The calculator covers direct legal costs. Indirect costs like emotional therapy, financial counseling, and moving expenses are not included.
